Getting Ready for Your Procedure

Preparation helps ensure a smooth surgical experience. Please follow the specific instructions provided by your surgeon.

Medications

  • Diabetic patients may be asked to skip morning insulin or oral medications due to fasting
  • Continue essential medications (heart, blood pressure, breathing) with a small sip of water
  • Bring inhalers or necessary medications with you

Eating & Drinking Guidelines

  • Morning surgery: no food or drink after midnight (except small sips of water for medications)
  • Later surgery: light breakfast allowed up to 5 hours before arrival
  • Clear liquids allowed up to 2 hours before arrival (no milk)

What to Wear on Surgery Day

Dress comfortably and keep things simple:

  • Loose, short-sleeve shirt that opens in the front
  • Comfortable pants and shoes
  • No eye makeup, hairpins, or jewelry

You will not need to fully undress.

Transportation & Arrival Details

Because sedation is used during surgery:

  • You must arrange a ride home
  • Bring only one companion
  • Plan for approximately 2 hours total visit time

Parking is available behind the surgery center. Your driver may drop you off at the entrance and park afterward.

You will be discharged into the care of a responsible adult.

Check-In & Registration

Please bring:

  • Photo ID
  • Insurance cards
  • Payment (if applicable)

You will be asked to sign a surgical consent form upon arrival. If you prefer to review this in advance, let us know prior to your surgery date.

Before Surgery Begins

After check-in:

  • You will be taken to the pre-operative area
  • Eye drops (such as dilating drops) will be administered
  • An IV will be placed for sedation

You may have a companion with you during this time. If you do not speak English, please bring someone who can assist.

What Happens During Surgery

Most procedures are performed using Monitored Anesthesia Care (MAC):

  • You will receive light IV sedation to help you relax
  • You will remain awake but comfortable
  • Your eye will be numbed, though you may feel mild pressure

During the procedure:

  • You will see lights and colors, not instruments
  • Your vital signs will be monitored throughout

Most patients find the experience easier than expected.

After Surgery & Recovery

Following the procedure:

  • You will rest briefly in the recovery area
  • Most patients go home the same day

For many procedures, including cataract surgery:

  • Normal activities such as reading or watching TV are usually allowed
  • Over-the-counter pain relievers are typically sufficient
  • Rest is recommended to help with mild irritation or watering

It is normal to experience:

  • Blurry vision initially
  • Enlarged pupils for up to 36 hours
  • Mild scratchy sensation

Your surgeon will review post-operative instructions and follow-up care with you.
