How the Light Adjustable Lens works

Cataract surgery
Your surgeon removes the cloudy lens and places the Light Adjustable Lens. This first step is the same as standard cataract surgery.

Light treatments
After your eye heals, you come back for one to three light treatments, depending on the vision you want. Each one adjusts the lens while you check how you see.[2]

Lock-in
When your vision matches your goals, two lock-in treatments make the result permanent.[2]
Until lock-in, you'll wear UV-protective glasses that you receive after surgery, so sunlight can't change the lens before it's set.[2]

Questions patients ask
How many visits does the Light Adjustable Lens take?
After your eye heals, you'll have one to three light treatments, depending on the vision you want, followed by two lock-in treatments. All of them take place in our office.[2]
Why do I wear special glasses after surgery?
UV light can change the lens until it's locked in, so you'll wear UV-protective glasses during the adjustment phase. You'll receive them after surgery.[2]
Is the Light Adjustable Lens FDA approved?
Yes. The FDA approved it in November 2017 as the first lens system that can be adjusted after surgery.[3]
Who is a candidate?
Adults having cataract surgery who also have some corneal astigmatism and no macular disease.[2] Your consultation includes the testing that shows whether your eyes qualify.
