What Happens If You’re Not a Candidate for LASIK?
LASIK has helped millions of people reduce their dependence on glasses and contact lenses. Because it’s the most recognized vision correction procedure, many patients assume it’s the only option available.
The reality is that not everyone is an ideal candidate for LASIK—and that isn’t necessarily bad news.
Advances in refractive surgery have created multiple ways to correct vision. In many cases, patients who are not good LASIK candidates can achieve excellent results with alternative procedures that may be better suited to their eyes.
Why Someone May Not Be a Candidate for LASIK
LASIK works by reshaping the cornea, the clear front surface of the eye. To do this safely, there must be enough healthy corneal tissue available. Several factors can affect LASIK candidacy, including:
- Thin corneas
- High prescriptions
- Irregular corneal shape
- Keratoconus
- Significant dry eye disease
- Early cataracts
- Age-related changes in the natural lens
Being told you are not a candidate for LASIK does not mean you are not a candidate for vision correction. It simply means a different approach may provide a safer and more effective outcome.
PRK: A Proven Alternative for Thin Corneas
Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK) was the first laser vision correction procedure and remains an excellent option today. Unlike LASIK, PRK does not require the creation of a corneal flap. Instead, the laser treatment is performed directly on the surface of the cornea. Because more corneal tissue is preserved, PRK is often recommended for patients with:
- Thin corneas
- Mild corneal irregularities
- Active lifestyles where flap-related concerns are important
While recovery is longer than LASIK, the long-term visual results are comparable.
EVO ICL: An Option for Higher Prescriptions
Some patients have prescriptions that are simply too high to be corrected safely with LASIK. For these individuals, the EVO Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL) may be a better solution. Rather than reshaping the cornea, EVO ICL places a specialized lens inside the eye that works alongside the eye’s natural lens. Benefits include:
- Excellent visual quality
- Treatment of moderate to high nearsightedness
- Preservation of corneal tissue
- Removability if necessary
Many patients are surprised to learn that ICL can provide visual outcomes that are equal to or even better than LASIK in certain situations.
Refractive Lens Exchange for Patients Over 50
For patients over 50, the issue is often no longer the cornea—it is the natural lens inside the eye. As we age, the lens becomes less flexible, leading to presbyopia and difficulty seeing up close. Early cataract changes may also begin to develop. In these cases, Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) may be a more appropriate option than LASIK.
RLE replaces the eye’s natural lens with an advanced intraocular lens designed to improve vision at one or multiple distances. Benefits include:
- Correction of nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism
- Reduction in dependence on reading glasses
- Elimination of future cataract development
For many patients in their 50s and beyond, RLE provides a more complete long-term solution than laser vision correction alone.
Why a Comprehensive Evaluation Matters
One of the most common mistakes patients make is assuming LASIK is the goal. The real goal is finding the procedure that is safest and most effective for your specific eyes.
At Peninsula Laser Eye Medical Group, Dr. Dan Beers and Dr. Jeffrey Liu perform a full range of refractive and lens-based procedures, including LASIK, PRK, EVO ICL, and Refractive Lens Exchange. Because multiple options are available, treatment recommendations can be based on what is truly best for the patient—not limited by a single procedure.
The Good News: There May Be Another Option
Hearing that you’re not a LASIK candidate can be disappointing at first. However, many patients discover they are actually better suited for an alternative procedure that offers excellent vision and long-term satisfaction. The best way to determine your options is through a comprehensive eye examination and refractive surgery consultation.
If you’ve been told you’re not a candidate for LASIK—or you’re simply exploring your options—schedule an evaluation with Peninsula Laser Eye Medical Group in Mountain View. Our team can help determine which vision correction procedure is best suited for your eyes, lifestyle, and long-term goals.
