Chalazion Drainage Procedure
If a chalazion becomes large, affects your vision, or does not improve with conservative treatment, a minor in-office procedure may be recommended.
At Peninsula Laser Eye Medical Group, the procedure is performed under local anesthesia and usually takes about 15 minutes. The blocked gland is gently drained to relieve pressure and allow it to heal properly.
You can drive yourself to and from the appointment. Some swelling afterward is normal. We recommend going home to rest for a few hours, then you can resume normal activities later the same day.
Non-Surgical Treatment Options
Most chalazia improve without surgery. We typically recommend starting with simple at-home care:
Warm compresses
Soak a clean cloth in hot water and apply it to the eyelid for 10 to 15 minutes, about 3 to 5 times a day. Reheat the cloth as needed to keep it warm. This helps soften the clogged gland and encourages it to open and drain. Once it starts draining, gentle massage around the area can help move the material out.
Antibiotic ointment
If there are signs of infection, or if the chalazion does not improve with warm compresses or keeps coming back, an antibiotic ointment may be prescribed.
Steroid injection
In some cases, a cortisone injection can be used to reduce swelling and help the chalazion shrink without needing a procedure.
When to Have It Checked
If your chalazion is not improving, getting larger, or starting to affect your vision, it is time for a professional evaluation. Early treatment can prevent ongoing irritation and more involved procedures.
